At the beginning of the 19th century Christmas was hardly celebrated. It was a minor day on the calendar as most celebrations at the end of December focused on the New Year. But by the end of the century, Christmas had become a major holiday. In fact, many if not most of our current holiday traditions started in the Victorian Era and would be instantly recognized by the Rogers family who lived at Hearthstone from 1882-1893.
Join Hearthstone’s Executive Director George Schroeder on a special tour that explores how today’s popular holiday traditions - from decorating trees to sending cards to eating turkey dinner - started in the Victorian Era. The tours are one hour in length and visit each room of the residence focusing on the lavish decorations and furnishings that bring to life the finest in Victorian Christmas celebrations.
