Acclaimed as an inventive genius, Lewis Latimer also worked side by side with some of the most famous names in American history - Alexander Graham Bell, Hiram Maxim, and Thomas Edison. Hearthstone’s exhibit explores not only Latimer’s inventions - many of which advanced Edison’s designs - but also his parent’s fight for freedom from slavery, their fight to remain free, and Latimer’s service in the US Navy during the Civil War.

The permanent exhibit is available on every tour of Hearthstone. Live virtual presentations to elementary school classes are also available starting February 1. Special events related to Lewis Latimer, his life, and his work will be scheduled in the near future.

FRIDAYS AND SATURDAY EVENINGS from Nov 30 - Dec 28 starting at 6:00 pm each evening.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children (children under five are free).

A holiday tradition continues as once again each room of Hearthstone is overflowing with Christmas decorations that bring to life this season of merriment and wonder.

As always, there is a new theme this year with all decorations hand-crafted to match by our dedicated curation staff and volunteers and with the advice and help of Fox Valley Technical Colleges’ school of design students. The result is stunning room-after-room of literal works of art that bring to life the best of Victorian Christmas traditions.

The evening events are “open-house” type of affairs with no set guided tour.  Rather, holiday merry-makers are encouraged to wander from room to room to take in the sights at their own pace.  Our holiday “welcomers” will be on-hand in each room, wearing their Victorian holiday finest, to welcome you in and explain Victorian holiday traditions or answer any questions that may arise.  The evenings also feature live performances of traditional Christmas carols played on our 1875 Kranich and Bach square grand piano as well as other musical guests.

Presented by Edison experts Robin & Joan Rolfs and Scott Malawski, authors of Edison and Christmas Tree Lights, this truly magical tour will highlight the evolution of Christmas lighting from this beginning, with just 80 miniature hand-blown bulbs, to the holiday staple, and giant industry, that it is today.

Following the 60 minute presentation, guests will tour of the Christmas light exhibit. The beautifully decorated rooms of Hearthstone will put everyone in the Christmas spirit.

FRIDAYS AND SATURDAY EVENINGS IN OCTOBER AS WELL AS HALLOWEEN NIGHT

Hearthstone’s most acclaimed and popular event is back and more chilling than ever in this new theatrical performance that brings you face-to-face with Victorian serial killers.

Vignettes in each room of the museum bring to life sequential killers - they weren’t called serial killers at the time - and their nefarious deeds. Season Seven features new killers as well as new tellings of a famous killer who has a direct connection to Hearthstone and of the most famous Victorian serial killer of all. Based on the newspaper accounts of the day, the scenes recount murder and mayhem, villains and victims, and the beginnings of our fascination with true crime.

As a special (trick or) treat this year, there will be performances on Halloween, Oct 31.

Please note: While the 60-minute performances are not gory, they are gripping and children under 13 years old are not allowed to attend. Each year the performances sell out quickly. Advanced purchase is strongly advised.

Please see the Events and Special Tours page for details and tickets.

Haunted Hearthstone - Sequential Killers of the Victorian Age - Season Seven

Join us for the seventh season of our acclaimed theatrical production that brings to life actual serial killers of the Victorian Age. This year’s production features a new cast of nefarious characters as well as new retellings of two famous killers… one with a direct connection to Hearthstone.

Unlike Halloween related events at other locations, Sequential Killers of the Victorian Age is scary - not because someone is jumping out of a closet - but because these people, the personification of maliciousness and woe, were real. Each year’s production is drawn from the newspaper accounts of the day.

The hour long tours, where guests are guided by police detectives through the museum, which is decorated for Victorian mourning, also includes exhibits on the ways Victorians remembered the dead. This includes memento mori like hair jewelry, tear vials, and post mortem photography.

As beautiful as they were, Victorian homes could be deadly. There were perils lurking in every room, from the clothing and cosmetics to the wallpaper and the plumbing.

Back by popular demand, this sold-out tour for the last three years is led by Hearthstone’s Executive Director George Schroeder. The 90-minute tour (one at 11 am and one at 2 pm each day) follows a day in the life of Henry and Cremora Rogers as they move through their home and encounter hidden dangers at every turn. The tour is alternatingly horrible and hilarious as guests wonder… “What were they thinking!?”

Tickets will be available exclusively on-one on the museum website. Please note that tickets sell out quickly.

“The latest fashion…is absolutely necessary for painting.  It’s what matters most.”

— Édouard Manet, 1881

To mark the 150th anniversary of the First Impressionist Exhibition in Paris and the first public display of Impression Sunrise by Claude Monet - from which the art movement gets its name - Hearthstone has unveiled its own new exhibit entitled Cloth and Canvas.

Cloth and Canvas features pieces from Hearthstone’s remarkable clothing collection and pairs them with museum-quality reproductions of famous works of Impressionist art to highlight Hearthstone as a superb clothing museum while also reveling in how a few flecks of paint can become a dress, a hat, a glove.

Importantly, Impressionism did not find commercial success until the new money of the America began to recognize and buy the works for their beauty and importance.

This special tour, led by Hearthstone’s Executive Director George Schroeder, delves into this world of art and fashion.  The exhibit also offers the perfect setting to explore Hearthstone’s possible connection to bringing Impressionism to Chicago, and by extension, to the world.

The simple joy of sitting on the back porch, enjoying locally made ice cream, on a beautiful summer’s afternoon… What can top that? Um, a little chocolate sauce maybe?

In honor of Hearthstone’s First Lady, Cremora Rogers, Hearthstone will be serving up scoops of delicious, locally made, ice cream (we have found it to be our duty to try local products, sometimes three or four times… just to make sure) at something we call our “Cream Aura” Old Fashion Ice Cream Social.

It will all be very informal. We will be sitting at table and chairs in the backyard of the museum - and on the veranda steps too of course - under the shade of the trees that line the riverbank. The ice cream will be available by the scoop in bowls (the ice cream cone wasn’t invented until 1904!). The event is free but we will be charging a modest amount for the ice cream as a fundraiser (but not the chocolate sauce, that’s on us - Hershey’s Cocoa is very Victorian being started in 1896). There may even be a croquet match or two breaking out.

Pull over, pedal over, or just wander over and join us for a Victorian ice cream social.

(Please note… ICE CREAM QUANTITIES ARE LIMITED. PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY. RAIN DATE JULY 28)

Hearthstone will emphasize not only this milestone but also its own art and clothing collections with an exhibit entitled Cloth and Canvas. Located throughout the museum, the exhibit will highlight Hearthstone’s remarkable historic clothing collection alongside museum-quality reproductions of avant-garde French 19th century art that depict articles of clothing similar to pieces in the museum’s collection.

Hearthstone’s favorite premier event is back and more mysterious than ever! Test your sleuthing skills as you join other guests - all in character and in costume - to solve a murder that happens (almost) right before your very eyes. It is an Agatha Christie novel come to life in the sumptuous surroundings of Hearthstone’s beautiful Victorian interiors (what could be more Agatha Christie than that!).

The night features heavy hors d'oeuvres and wine and soft drinks served by the museum’s volunteers dressed as maids and butlers while guests interact (in character, of course) to figure out who had motive and opportunity to do the dastardly deed. It is a night dedicated to mayhem, murder, and fun!

Tickets will be available exclusively on-line on this website starting Jan 9.

Additional performances are planned for other weekend nights.
